The Kigali Economic Forum 2024
The objective of the second edition of the Kigali Economic Forum
The purpose of this forum is to highlight the role and prospects of Africa, and particularly East Africa, in the fragmented and unstable global context we are currently experiencing. The objective is to identify key areas for which pan-African cooperation would generate benefits for participating countries. In that perspective, the forum will bring together all stakeholders, including senior national and international public officials, entrepreneurs, academics, media representatives, NGOs, and civil society. It will culminate in a final statement addressed to all relevant public and private decision-makers.
Why a second edition of the Kigali Economic Forum?
In close collaboration with the highest Rwandan authorities, the Circle of Economists organized the very first edition of the Kigali Economic Forum in December 2023. This initiative brought together nearly a thousand participants over two days of discussion, and much more via social networks.
Building on this experience and its success, Le Cercle des économistes and the Rwandan authorities have decided to establish the Kigali Economic Forum as a regular event gathering leaders and experts from East Africa and beyond. Topics that will be discussed are relevant for all regions of the African continent as well as other parts of the world.
This 2nd edition of the Kigali Economic Forum will take place on December 16 and 17, and will explore the following theme: “African Economies: The Virtues of Cooperation.”
The 2nd Kigali Economic Forum will take place on December 16 and 17. It will focus on the following theme: “African economies: the virtues of cooperation”.
Discussing the perspectives of the African continent from a multidisciplinary perspective
Africa and the world face multiple systemic crises and numerous conflicts, from health crisis to the war in Ukraine and conflicts in the Middle East. Globalization is receding in favor of protectionism, international economic fragmentation, and the rise of regional blocs. More than ever, it is crucial to discuss the current state and future prospects of the African continent.
Over two days and eight round tables, the Forum will address essential questions for the future of Africa and the world. When it comes to energy, ecological transition, education, North-South or South-South relations, or technology, inventing tomorrow’s solutions require a multidisciplinary approach.
Discussions will cross macroeconomic data with perspectives from companies, both large and small, including SMEs and startups. This is the only way, we believe, to shed light on the innovation process and the foreseeable impact of new technologies like AI.
From diagnosis to practical recommendations
The 2nd Kigali Forum aims at discussing potential recommendations directly relevant to the African continent, including Africa’s still limited role in global governance, financing of the energy and ecological transition, and the role of youth in the economy and society.
Fully addressing these various themes, which shape Africa’s future, requires gathering all kinds of stakeholders, from senior political, monetary, and financial leaders to entrepreneurs, academics, experts from national and international organizations, NGO leaders, journalists and representatives of traditional and social media, civil society actors…
This is the ambition of the 2nd edition of the Kigali Forum.
